How to create a spring wardrobe on a budget
Spring has bloomed!
So when it comes to fashion, one of the most exciting times of the year is when the seasons change and we get to start fresh with our wardrobe. But if you're like most people and you don't have a lot of money to spend on new clothes every single time the weather changes, it's important to know how to put together a stylish wardrobe.
And that's where I come in.
By following my tips, you are going to feel so trendy that people will probably start to think, Where did you get your outfit from? But really we got it from our own wardrobe.
So are you ready?
Tip #1: We are going to shop from our own closet first
Before you even start thinking about shopping for new clothes, I want you to have a look at what you already have in your closet, because I think you'll be surprised at how many pieces you can re-wear from previous seasons just by adding a small tweaks here and there.
So for example, if you have a denim skirt, this can be turned into this year's trendy, distressed mini skirt, or just a distressed, mid-length skirt, whatever the length of the skirt is by adding a few rips and tears. If you have a silk blouse, let's say from like two springs ago, give it a new life! Let's pair it with some wide-leg pants or some statement earrings.
So the point is, I don't want you to discount what you already have in your closet because when you actually think about it and we start getting creative, we can actually make some of our old pieces feel brand new again.
Step one is to go through your closet and pull out all of the pieces you used to wear a couple of springs ago. Then, think about what new pieces you've bought and how you can make that look again.
Here's an extra hint! Check out what the models are wearing and how they are styled online. And then try to make similar looks based on what you saw.
Tip #2: Stick to basics
When putting together a spring wardrobe, it's important to have some basics and stick to them. Your basics are the pieces you can mix and match with trendy, cool pieces. Also, you won't have to spend a lot of money.
A good pair of denim jeans is an important spring wardrobe staple. And even a white t-shirt, a denim jacket, and maybe some neutral shoes that you can wear with anything. If you don't and you only have one pair of black shoes, you should think about your shoe collection and add some tan and camel colours to break up the black.
So what I really want you to think about is the word basic.
What does basic mean?
It just means simple, everyday colours and shapes. Those are the most important parts. These are the pieces you put on your body first. Then you add the printed scarf, the fun earrings, the fur jacket, and the cool shoes.
Basics are the most important things in your closet. So it's important that you stick to that first. I want you to check your closet to see what's missing. What do you need to add? Or, if you want to start adding trendy spring pieces, do you really need that many? Do you just need a few fun shorts or a new top to go with the basics you already have?
Tip #3: Try shopping at secondhand stores
This is one of the best ways to actually find some pretty amazing pieces.
Not only are you going to find clothes for the fraction of the price, but it is such a great place to get some unique pieces too. And not many people will be wearing it.
So how cool will you look with your denim skirt and this brand new top that we thrifted and everyone will be thinking Girl, where did you get that from? It's a one-of-a-kind kind of thing.
Now, I want to discuss a couple of little things when it comes to a spring wardrobe. A pair of jeans, a white t-shirt, and a black blazer and the essentials.
They're like your core basic pieces that every girl should have in their wardrobe. And then once you have those basic pieces, you can start adding in your fun seasonal spring styles... Like floral and prints.
In spring, you're going to see a lot of bold, vibrant colours and patterns. So it could be fun to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe. Try pairing a floral dress with simple jewellery and nude heels. Or, if you are someone on the casual side, go for a floral top and some denim shorts.
Don't be afraid of floral!
There are big prints and small prints, there are bright colours and muted colours. Just shop around, have a look online, go in-store, try some floral and see what you're interested in.
Gingham is going to be another big trend this season. So, this classic print has been all over the runways and red carpets, and it is a look to rock. I personally love wearing gingham dresses in spring!
Something you can try is pairing a beautiful gingham blouse with wide-leg trousers or maybe looking for a gingham skirt with a solid T-shirt. However you decide to pick your gingham, it is honestly going to put a smile on someone's face because it is actually the current trend right now, and it's a beautiful pattern to have.
Tip #4: For a more edgy look add some metallic
And finally, if you want a bit more of an edge to your look this spring, I want you to think about adding metallic to your wardrobe. This can be as easy as putting on a pair of silver hoops or a gold piece of jewellery when you're out drinking with your friends, hanging out with your girlfriends, or at the office.
Because metallic will make you stand out from the crowd, and it will be a fun, unique addition to your spring wardrobe. So, if you don't like big, loud, bold prints like floral or gingham, think about your jewellery. Add a little sparkle here and there and a few studs here and there.
I also want you to know that life is really what you make it.
In summary
Don't feel like you have to keep on top of the trends!
Don't feel as if you have to follow what everyone is doing!
I want you to feel comfortable and happy and actually wake up and ask yourself, How do I want to feel today? And then think about what that looks like? What wardrobe pieces are screaming out to you?
The best fun way that I like to enjoy my wardrobe is by mixing and matching new pieces with older styles. If you haven't done so already, give yourself some time over the weekend to go through your wardrobe, put some music on and bring out some old pieces from last spring, and then mix and match.
See what you can create. :)
