How to pack for a short trip

Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a business trip, I’ve got you covered with some handy tips and tricks to make packing a breeze.

As a former Qantas international flight attendant, I have some amazing tips and tricks for packing lightly on any short trip that you may take. With seven years of experience in the industry, I know all the best ways to make sure you have everything you need without having to lug around an overly-heavy suitcase. In this blog, I'll be sharing my top tricks on how to lighten your load while still looking stylish and feeling prepared.

And at the end of this blog I will also provide you with a downloadable wardrobe checklist that you can use as a handy reference to help you pack for your upcoming trip. This checklist will guide you in choosing the right clothing items that are versatile, practical, and suitable for your destination and activities.

So, grab your favourite travel mug, sit back, and let's get started!

  • Break the habit of packing "outfit by outfit"

When it comes to packing for a trip, it's easy to fall into the trap of packing entire outfits for each day. The goal should not be “how many outfits” you can fit into your bag as this can quickly lead to over packing and carrying unnecessary items. To pack lightly and efficiently, try to break the habit of packing outfit to outfit. Instead, focus on packing versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks. This will help you save space in your luggage and allow for more flexibility in your wardrobe choices during your trip.

  • Start with your shoes

Shoes are often the heaviest and bulkiest items in our luggage, so it's essential to be strategic when packing them. Start by selecting one or two pairs of shoes that are comfortable and suitable for the activities you have planned. Avoid packing multiple pairs of shoes that serve the same purpose, as this will add unnecessary weight to your luggage. Remember to wear the bulkiest pair of shoes while traveling to save space in your suitcase. Pick styles that will go with multiple outfits - think sandals and sneakers with maximum versatility (and comfort!). This way, your feet won’t get tired from running around in fashion boots all day. Your shoes are going to be one of your biggest items when it comes to packing, so choose wisely!

  • Bring Your "must-have" pieces

When packing lightly, it's important to prioritise your "must-have" pieces. These are the essential items that you absolutely need for your trip, such as underwear, socks, and basic tops. Lay out all the items you think you need, and then go through them to eliminate any duplicates or unnecessary items. Be realistic about what you will actually wear during your trip and pack only the essentials. So pull out these must have items and pack them first - like plain t-shirts and jeans because they’ll go with almost anything! Choose materials that don't wrinkle easily and can transition well between day and night looks.

  • Consider 3 fun "feel good" pieces

It's always great to have a few "feel good" pieces in your wardrobe while traveling. These are the items that make you feel confident, comfortable, and excited to wear. Choose three of your favourite "feel good" pieces, whether it's a colourful sundress, a statement accessory, or a fun pair of pants. These pieces can add personality to your outfits and will help lift up your mood and allow you to express yourself through fashion while also keeping your bag light.

  • Think versatile pieces

Finally - look for those timeless pieces which will match up perfectly with everything else in your bag! Versatility is key to packing lightly. Look for clothing items that can be worn in multiple ways to create different outfits. For example, a basic white t-shirt can be worn with jeans for a casual look, tucked into a skirt for a dressier outfit, or layered under a sweater for added warmth. Avoid packing items that only have one purpose or can only be worn with a specific outfit. Opt for pieces that can be mixed and matched to create various looks, maximising your outfit options with minimal items
